The answer is yes and no. Yes, moth balls can deter bats however, you need to have a large concentration of them. There is actually a formula for the pounds of moth balls per square foot that would be necessary to deter them. Bats like humans breathe through their nose and just like us they don’t like large concentrations of this strong odor. If you had enough moth balls to get rid of bats from the walls of your house, chances are that you would not want to live there either!
Moth balls are for moths and the label is the law. Reputable exterminators all know that as one of the basic things to know about pest control. Always follow the label on a product, otherwise you could be sued and or lose your license to do pest control.
Now with all of that being said, Florida’s department of wildlife actually recommends moth balls to get rid of bats! This is actually really stupid advice. Nobody wants to buy a home or live in a home that is engulfed in the smell of moth balls.
The best thing to do is to exclude the bats properly and seal the openings that they were using to prevent them from ever returning.
